Does anyone have a decent 11 point Serif font (good for a manual). I only
have 12 point fonts and it slows down terribly when I scale it to 11 point.
If I just type everything in 12 point and then change it over to 11 point when
I'm ready to print, I get some missing portions of the letters (due to the
raster scaling) on my print out. I don't mind this at all on my 9-pin printout
as the final copy will be printed on the Atari Laser. But I don't know if it
will do the same thing on the Laser or not (could someone who has the laser
test this for me?). Oh, I need the 11 point Serif for a monochrome screen, a 9-
pin Epson printer and 300dpi Atari Laser. If no one has one, is is possible to
rescale my 12 point one to an 11 point font? Thanks.

Hello,
I bought Word Up a few weeks ago and I am impressed with its abilities
to do things. However, it leaves bottom margin to two inches. I even set
both top and bottom margins to 0.40 and it still won't print last part of page
and goes to next page. My document is resume and one page long. The install
printer (control panel) is set to daisy, b/w,960 pl, final, printer, and feed.
I have TurboJet, Mega 2 and Deskjet Plus. Am I missing something? I would
appreciate anyone could solve this problem.

Jon, I had a similar problem with Word Up for a while. In my case the page
break would move around on the page, depending on AUTO programs and ACCs. I
finally traced to the problem to SI Ramdisk, which affected Word Up
differently depending on the ACC slot it was in. I switched to Ramplus, and
have had no problems since. Several people have reported printing problems
with Word Up that seem to be related to available memory. The symptoms seem to
indicate that Word Up 'thinks' there is more memory available than there
really is, and collides with allocated memory blocks when it is forming up a
page of printer data.
Anyway, try to give the program more space by cutting back on other things
that occupy memory. I've got a 2.5 Meg machine, and I had to reduce the size
of my Ramdisk to get reliable printing.

Fred, Thanks! I removed all acc's from the slots and Word Up now can print on
a whole page. Now, I can send my resumes out to companies. I appreciate your
tip.
I wonder if a print spooler would solve this printing problem while the acc's
are in the slots. I checked the statistic option in Word Up and there was
1,019 k bytes free and my document only use 227 bytes.

Jon, I've always used a print spooler with Word Up. SI Ram included a separate
spooler, and Ramplus writes dynamic files to its ramdisk to serve as a
spooler. A spooler can speed up Word Up's printing, but one won't fix any
memory-related printing problems, since all the page layout is done inside a
buffer. Word Up does create temporary files if the whole page can't be fit
into what it thinks is the available memory. In a 1 Meg ST a spooler would
possibly do more harm than good, since its presence in memory would shrink the
size of the buffer and require more fragmentation of the page, and give Word
Up something else to bump up against.

Here's a quick question...
Has anyone ever had the problem of WordUp printing 1/2 of a line on page 2
from page 1 (by 1/2, I mean the upper half of an entire line)? It happens
ocassionaly, but will repeat itself on each individual file (i.e. it seems to
be "saved" onto that file).
Any suggestions?

John,
What type of printer do you have? My first guess would be that Word Up is
sending a slightly longer page than your printer can handle. Try shrinking
your bottom margin a bit or specifying a shorter page. I've occasionally run
into this problem on my DeskJet, where the bottom row of dots from the bottom
line gets printed on the next page. It's almost invisible...

Jon,
DCRESERV (I think that's the name; it's a program of the week from the DC
folks) keeps WordUp from grabbing all available memory, and therefore lets you
use an ACC spoolers or other ACC programs such as UNLZH while WordUp is
running. I've tried print spoolers of up to 500K with WordUp and they don't
speed up printing past about 200K in size, since the delay in printing is
mostly in the program itself.

Fred,
It's a Panasonic KX-P1123. I've compared two separate files that exhibit this
and both seem to "copy" the line that is 3 or so inches from the top of the
page. I'll check into the page length setting, I usually NEVER set this, and
my default may be a bit screwy.
Thanks for the suggestion!

Anyone,
Does anybody out there know of a easy way to set up WordUp to use several
different printer drivers depending on your mood? Let me explain. I would
like to be able to use either my KXP1124 or a HP Laser Jet by choosing
different ASSIGN.SYS files (or some other method) at bootup. I'm no
ASSIGN.SYS expert so any pointers would help. I do use DESKMANAGER so I can
easily pick different files at boot.
Thanks, John.

John - you are going to have to use a text edittor to write different assign
files that load different printer drivers. If you had Word-Up 2, it had an
excellent description of how to write and ASSIGN.SYS file. Also, G-Plus from
Codehead software will let you do the same, without rebooting. If you have
WORDUP 3, be advised there are some problems with having different resolution
fonts loaded in the FONTSDEV.21 file that the program looks for its fonts in -
it's more reliable to use the old-fashioned method of loading into RAM the
fonts you want to use. To be specific - your assign file looks something like
this-
path = A:\GDOS.SYS ;a semicolon indicates a comment like. The first line of
the ASSIGN.SYS file tells where the program should look for the drivers and
fonts - the complete path name 01p SCREEN FONTS ;default fonts 02p SCREEN
FONTS ;low rez screen fonts 03p SCREEN FONTS ;med rez screen fonts 04p SCREEN
FONTS ;high rez screen fonts 21 (your printer driver name) font file 1 (ex
ATSS12CG.FNT) font file 2
Considerable trial and error is involved in finding out exactly what kind of
ASSIGN.SYS file your program will tolerate - feel free to ask questions - list
your file here and I'm sure the user base will help fix it.

P.LOUIE1 - having spent endless hours playing with the ASSIGN files for
WordUp, I can assure you that the WordUp 2.0 file will work with WordUp 3 IF
you include the entry NOT_USED.FNT in each screen driver and printer driver
section of the ASSIGN.SYS file. WordUp 3 includes a feature that loads the
printer and screen fonts you need only when you are using them, saving your
memory for program use. The fonts are placed in the WORDUP folder in a folder
called FONTSDEV.? (03=med rez screen, 04=hirez screen and 21=printer driver)
The idea is that when WORDUP sees the NOT_USED.FNT, it looks in the FONTSDEV.?
folder for the appropriate fonts. This works with some fonts I have tried,
and not with others. The easiest way to get the program up and running is to
just use the ASSIGN.SYS written by the WORDUP 3.0 INSTALL.PRG, then just stick
all your fonts in the appropriate FONTSDEV.? file, and boot up the program,
look in the fonts list, and see which ones worked. Add fonts one at a time,
because some will cause the program to abort GDOS font-loading, and if you
load a bunch, you can't identify the culprit. The Sans and Serif in WORDUP 3
definitely conflict with the Dutch and Swiss fonts in WORDUP 2 - save the
agony and don't try to load all those at once. With any luck, FSMGDOS will
reder these problems moot.

I can report that Word Up 3 works well with FSM GDOS. I bought Wordflair to
get FSM, but I find that when I want to write something it's Word Up that I
prefer to use. For fun I tried the FSM font with Word Up and could not get it
to work, as you might expect. I haven't noticed any perfromance differences
with FSM over G+Plus. On the other hand, the FSM font cache technique may have
fixed some of Word Up's memory allocation problems. I've made a few AUTO/ACC
changes since installing FSM and Word Up's printing has kept on working!

When loading Word Up I get a message that one of the fonts can't load because
it has the same ID as one of the fonts in ASSIGN.SYS. Then when I look at
the fonts availible inside of Word Up, I find that ONE of the fonts is an FSM
font and when I pick various point sizes for it FSMGDOS rescales it for me and
I am able to use it in my documents. This indicates to me that there could be
a way to get Word Up to us ALL outline fonts even before Atari gets around to
rewriting it.

After reading Alter's message I went back and tried installing the FSM font
into Word Up again. This time it worked! Not only that, but the DeskJet driver
from Atari is much quicker printing the FSM font than the Neotron Turbojet
driver is with the bit fonts. This is great! If Word Up remains as stable
under FSM as it has seemed so far, the Atari version may not need much work at
all.
Is there anyone else with Word Up and FSM yet?

Mike Fulton,
I don't know if you ever read this area since you moved to Atari, but maybe
you could tell us how to get more of the FSM fonts to work with Word Up 3.0.
Since at least ONE font works that would seem to indicate that there is not a
fundamental incompatiblity and the printer drivers work as well. But Word Up
3.0 does not use the traditional ASSIGN.SYS for its GDOS fonts so I'm not sure
why the one font that does work (Bold Roman I think) works.
Esmith,
What kind of setup do you have exactly? I am running on TOS 2.05 with 4Meg of
RAM. If anything though I think I would be less compatible than most systems
with my setup, I do have to disable Quick ST before I can run Word Up with
FSMGDOS though.

I'm also running TOS 2.05 with 4M memory & FSM. I simply put the ATSS12.FNT
from the FSM GDOS package into the Word Up FONTSDEV.04 folder and deleted all
the old fonts there with similar names and ID#'s. This resulted in Word Up
giving me Swiss (Font ID#2) and Dutch (Font ID#14) from this one entry via FSM
magic. The point sizes available are the ones I had already specified in the
FSM Font Manager CPX. I have nothing with either ID number in the Word Up
FONTSDEV.21 (printer) folder. FSM seems to handle all the printing with its
driver, which so far I prefer to Neotron's. At the same time, all the old bit
fonts I like look better than ever on my DeskJet.
I use Superboot to disable Quick ST 2.2 whenever I load FSM (which is only
when I'm going to use it!). As nice as it is, with its accelerator
incompatability and my requirement for a huge bit font cache, I can't afford
to have FSM clogging up the system when not in use. Thank goodness for custom
boot utilities!
I bought Wordflair II to get FSM, but guess which word program I'm using the
most?...

Teddy,
Don't quit yet. You may just have a problem with GDOS locations. If
you installed Word Up on a floppy system, you should have the
following elements on your Word Up Drive A disk:
GDOS.PRG in your AUTO folder (or G+PLUS, a superior replacement).
FONTSDEV.03 folder holding fonts for Medium Rez
FONTSDEV.04 folder holding fonts for Hi Rez
GDOS.SYS folder holding NOT_USED.FNT (To trick GDOS into working with
Word Up's font handling scheme)
ASSIGN.SYS file which should look like this:
Path = A:\GDOS.SYS\
;
01p screen.sys ; Default screen
;
02p screen.sys ; Low-Rez screen
;
03p screen.sys ; Med-Rez screen
NOT_USED.FNT
;
04p screen.sys ; High-Rez screen
NOT_USED.FNT
;
21 HPDSK300.SYS ; Printer driver <-- Your driver goes here
NOT_USED.FNT
;
31 META.SYS
~~~~~~~
So check your Word Up disk and see if it matches. If so, try again
and note exactly what Word Up is telling you it can't locate, and
maybe we can figure it out together.
Don't rush into a new install. Instead try to learn what is wrong with your
current set-up. The hard drive parameters are very similar to the floppy specs
I posted. The FONTSDEV folders (including FONTSDEV.21 for printer fonts)
should be in your WORDUP folder. Make sure that the path in your ASSIGN.SYS
file on Drive C has the correct address for the GDOS.SYS folder (which you can
put anywhere, as long as you have the path in ASSIGN.SYS showing it).
No acc's are used on my 1040STF. My solution is to print the second page
page. My margins are fine the bage breaks are fine. It just happens on the
second page. Sorry I didn't have a better solution but I would also be
John,
Maybe someone else will some ideas, but using multiple printer fonts sounds
tough to me. I believe that Word Up is more interested in the font ID#s than
it is in the names of the fonts it uses. So even if you change the names, the
fonts will still have the same ID#s. I have the Fontz program, which I have
used from time to time to resolve font ID# conflicts. If you have Fontz or
some other way to change the font ID#s and have a lot of memory, you could
make multiple screen/printer font sets with unique ID#s, then Word Up would
treat them as different fonts. Another approach would be to have multiple
FONTSDEV.21 folders, and rename them as you need the various printers.
WOW! Received FSM from Goldleaf on Monday and does it work great! This is
like Calamus or PageStream in a word processor with very clean text. 11pt
Lucida is the perfect size for basic text & reports. I found 10pt a trifle
small and 12pt a little too large. Even the Calligraphy font looks great in
all sizes.
If you ain't got it yet.....run, don't walk to wherever and GET IT! This is
And best of all, it works with WordUp just perfectly although there's a note
There have been several comments here about using the new FSMGDOS with Wordup.
My results have been mixed and I wonder if I'm missing something or others
are.
When I first tried it, Wordup only showed Swiss and Dutch fonts but ignored
the Lucida fonts (the outline fonts) even though they were activated (EasyDraw
found them but not Wordup). I then deleted the bitmap fonts from the FSMGDOS
folder and now Wordup did find the Lucida fonts. However it will not print
with these fonts (4 bombs) and I noticed some problems handling the spacings
on the screen if I changed a block of text to a smaller font size.
So I guess my question is to those who have reported success; are you sure
that you were using outline fonts and not just the bitmap fonts and if so did
you try printing? BTW, I was using a Deskjet.
Thanks, John Spande
FSM works fine with WordUp. I didn't bother setting up with the bit mapped
fonts - who wants them if you have scalable outline fonts. Just use the
FSMACC. When I installed FSM I only asked for FSM and not FONTGDOS
installation.
I did notice that as a CPX or a non-resident ACC in MultiDesk that trying to
save the FSM Cache produced a zero byte file that I hadf named DEFAULT.FSM but
every time I checked the FSMACC it still showed the cache was not being used.
I had set FSM to 160K with Miscellaneous at 50K and GDOS at 20K. The program
apparently resets these and apportions them to total +/- 240K. I then found
that by running FSM as a regular desk accessory once that the cache was saved
as a 13,526 byte file and the cache is being used. This dramatically improved
screen refresh rates in WordUp, particularly when you first load the program.
The Lucida fonts are very nice. I have only installed Lucida and Calligraphy
fonts as well. I did not install the italic or bold fonts for either and I
didn't use the Typewriter fonts. I have the Symbol font enabled though. You
apparently don't need the italic or bold fonts installed. Most programs have
a bolding or italic option inside their code and this works fine with WordUp,
EasyDraw etc.
All this was done through the SLM not an HP. Maybe your driver isn't set up
right.
Thanks for the response. Now I'll definately try again using Wordup with
FSMGDOS. It just occured to me what probably was my problem. I removed the bit
map fonts from the FSMGDOS folder but did not change the ASSIGN.SYS file.
GDOS may be just about dead, but I still use WORDUP with it for now, and with
my monochrome monitor dead, I need to create some fonts for medium resolution.
The documents with GEMFED are somewhat vague - as I understand it, the MEDIUM
RES ST is 640X200 - therefore, the fonts should be scaled to be the same width
and 1/2 the height of the HIRES fonts, label as *CG.FNT - load in the
ASSIGN.SYS and away we go?
GEMFED says it will create a 90X90 font - does that mean at 180dpi it
will be a 1/2 inch font (at 360dpi a 1/4 inch font)? Or does that refer to a
VDI resolution that is translated by the printer driver? For example, WORDUP
2 documents says GDOS has a scale of 72dpi - this would me a 90X90 font would
be > 1 inch tall.
Any advise would be appreciated.
Something you might try is using your mono fonts in medium rez. I tried this
as an experiment recently, and Word Up 3 loaded them in without a qualm. The
only catch is that they display twice as high as they would print, so you'd
probably have to double your page length to get reasonable results when
printing.
I can't guarantee success, because I was running FSM at the time. With the new
GDOS, Word Up 3 goes to the ASSIGN.SYS file to find its fonts rather than the
FONTSDEV folders. But you might give it a try...just change the name of your
FONTSDEV.04 folder to FONTSDEV.03. It's easy to return to status quo if it
doesn't work!
I've used WordUp 3 with great success in TOS 2.05. The general consensus is
that the more memory you have, the better WordUp works. It has a flakey memory
allocation scheme that causes more problems in restricted quarters. In 4 Megs,
I have had not a single problem running it with FSMGDOS (although it is
restricted to bit fonts).
You have come across one of the bugs in the program. I had the same problem
and I have TOS 1.2 - 4 megs...or at least it sounds like the same thing. It
would print one copy of the document and then I'd have to reboot. You need to
find a file called WUPDATE.ARC. (I think that's the name). It SHOULD take
care of it. Be aware, though, that WordUp still has its idiosyncrasies and
will still crash on occasion.
At one time, a company called E. Arthur Brown was mailing registered owners a
'fix' for this particular print problem (which is where I got mine.) I'm not
sure if they are still doing this (for a fee of $8), but it might be worth a
shot. Their address is:
E. Arthur Brown Co. 3404 Pawnee Dr. Alexandria, MN 56308
OR
For information call: 1-612-762-8847.
(If you can't find WUPDATE.ARC, I should still have the file and (although
I've never tried to use GEnie's fmail option) I will u/l it for you in
Word Up uses GDOS. When you print a file, even without graphics, the data is
being sent to the printer as a graphic image. Depending on what sort of
printer you have, this can take quite a while, especially on a slow dot matrix
printer. This slower print speed is the tradeoff for Word Up's multiple type
styles and sizes.
If you have a document that doesn't require any of the extras, and only want a
fast printout using your printer's native fonts, put Word Up into text mode.
That will disable all of the graphics capabilities, and the data will be sent
to your printer as characters, and thus much faster.
J.Brigham, you ask why Word Up prints so slowly even though no graphics were
in your test file? Because unless you are in plain vanilla "Text" mode,
without any fancy fonts, Word Up treats your entire page as one big graphic.
Since those fancy fonts are pretty much the main reason to use Word Up, you're
pretty well stuck with slow print times. You can use text mode, with the
control panel printer setting on draft, and your printer set on draft to speed
up drafts considerably. To speed up your letter quality final product you
can try FFPRINT.PRG which I have found to give about a 10-15% improvement. Or
maybe buy an accelerator for your computer. (Does anyone here use Word Up
with a Mega STE or TT? Does that speed up the printing?)
A software print spooler seems to speed up WordUp printing considerably for
me.
I have noticed that the DJ5.SYS printer driver I got with FSM GDOS does not
send a final form feed to the printer. It's a minor inconvenience, considering
that it prints faster than Neotron's DJ driver. I've said this before, and
I'll repeat it. FSM GDOS makes Word Up like a new program. I had my share of
problems with WordUp - compatibility, printing errors, memory conflicts - but
ever since FSM GDOS came into my computers, WordUp has been a sweetheart. No
problems at all, either with TOS 2.05 and 4 Megs, or with TOS 1.04 with 2.5
Megs. If Atari releases FSM this century, any WordUp user should grab it!
FPPRNT.PRG from Frank Pawlowski _noticeably_ speeded up my WordUp output to my
DJ500 (Mega 4 with TOS 1.02). I've also seen it work with a 4-meg 520ST, TOS
1.04, to a DJ+. You don't even have to time the output to be impressed by the
speedup. Frank has a bigger and better version, OUTBURST.PRG which is
tailored particularly for PageStream, but still gives the same benefits as
FPPRNT for WordUp.
If you're using a DJ with WordUp, you'll love the improvement!
Well, yes. WordUp is really slow loading a scaled font. I haven't yet
experimented with making a DEFAULT.FSM file from inside WordUp; that could
help. My delight with FSM and WordUp has more to do with bit fonts. I have a
lot of them that I like, and they're now a real pleasure to use. Once WordUp
gets a scaled font digested, typing and printing speed is the same as with the
bitters.
The no Form Feed problem has not bothered me much. I don't do many long
documents.
Fred......if you're going to use the vector fonts in FSM you really need to
create a DEFAULT.FSM - the difference is really worth it at boot time to
wait a little while the fonts are loaded as opposed to waiting iterminably
while each letter is loaded and calculated as you type in WordUp.
Just type in every possible character that you want to use on a regular basis
including the ones that are available under the 'Extended' keyboard menu, in
every font you want to use and in every size you intend to install as a
default. Then print the document. Then save the DEFAULT.FSM file which will
include the screen and printer versions of each letter. Alternatively,. you
could just load the screen fonts rather than the printer fonts too. It'll
make a smaller file but with less RAM overhead but print a little slower too.
A trade-off.
Try it Fred....you'll like it!
Keith,
As per your original post, I created a DEFAULT.FSM file from Wordflair. This
in is the Drive C Root Directory. After experimenting more with WordUp and
scaled fonts, I don't think that the DEFAULT.FSM file would make any
difference. When I go to select a scaled font from the WordUp dialog, there is
about a 30 second delay while nothing palpable happens - no HD access. Then
the mouse comes back to life and the font listing appears on the Active Font
Line. At this point I can change sizes with almost no delay. But if I go to
get another scaled font, I have to wait the same 30 seconds. The kicker is
that if I change back to a font that I have already used in the same document,
there is still the 30 second sleep period. So it doesn't seem that stuffing
more fonts into the cache would make a difference.
What do you think?
Anna,
FSM comes with an install program, so the actual installation is simple. You
do have to set the sizes of three caches. After several months of fiddling
I've come up with:
Character Cache 300K
Miscellaneous " 200K
Bitmap Font " 200K
These seem to work OK on both my computers, which have 4M and 2.5M of memory.
Using FSM with less than 2 Megs and a hard drive will likely remove much of
the enjoyment...
I've been unable to mix scaled and bit fonts in WordUp. I'd like to hear from
someone who has! But here's how I'm running -
Bitmap Fonts: Make a 'real' ASSIGN.SYS file. FSM cuts through the NOTUSED
font/folder scheme WordUp had and looks for fonts only in the path given at
the top of the ASSIGN.SYS. So list all the screen & printer fonts you want to
use. By the way FSM comes with standard Roman & Swiss (sans serif) bit fonts
that I feel are superior to those from Neotron. Move your fonts from those
FONTSDEV folders to wherever your ASSIGN.SYS file wants them to be. List the
FSM printer driver in the ASSIGN.SYS, and you should be ready to roll with all
your bit fonts. The program acts just like it did under G+Plus, but all the
problems I had with printing vanished under FSM. It's been just great.
Scaled Fonts: Simply use a stripped out ASSIGN.SYS with only the printer
driver installed. Here's my 'scaled' ASSIGN.SYS:
PATH = E:\GDOS.SYS
1P SCREEN.SYS
2P SCREEN.SYS
3P SCREEN.SYS
4P SCREEN.SYS
21 DJ5.SYS ;FSM DeskJet Driver
31 META.SYS
This allows me access to all the scaled fonts I've 'turned on' with the FSM
DA/CPX. If I add even one bit font to this listing WordUp ignores all the
scaled fonts.
Although WordUp does use the scaled fonts and print them beautifully, it takes
an annoying 30 seconds to 'scan' the fonts every time I go to the font select
dialog. If you like to vary fonts a lot in a document this could affect your
sanity. Also, the first release of the DeskJet printer driver does not do a
formfeed at the end of a page. I hope this has been fixed for the 'general'
release.
I use Superboot to select the ASSIGN.SYS of the moment.
As I recall (I could be wrong), FPPRNT is only supposed to work with HP
DeskJets, LaserJets, and compatibles. It sends output to the printer faster
than the normal TOS routines -- _if_ the printer can handle faster input. I'm
using OutBurST! (an outgrowth of FPPRNT, optimized for PageStream) now and the
documentation with it does not address any printers other than HPs and
compatibles.
I'll leave FSMGDOS to Fred: it works for him, but, despite a lot of
Anna,
How do you define "drastically different"? I did my experimenting with
WordUp/FSMGDOS on a bare system (without any AUTO programs or accessories
other than FSMGDOS-related stuff). That just left the hardware and TOS as
variables. I'm using a Mega ST4 with TOS 1.02. Fred has used (as I recall)
both an MSTE with 2.05 and some kind of older 2.5-meg ST with 1.04
successfully.
When I try WordUp with FSMGDOS, the screen fonts display properly, but I can't
print. After WordUp processes the document for printing and puts up the
"Press ESC after outputting etc." message, the system dies with four bombs at
the time it would start sending output to the printer. FSMGDOS works (and
prints) just fine for me with WFII, EasyDraw, Silhouette, and FirstGraph, both
on the bare system and with all my AUTO programs and accessories loaded.
Frustrating.
BTW, FSMGDOS comes with an ACC/CPX program which makes managing the ASSIGN.SYS
file less of a challenge.
To all you Wordup fans. I have used wordup3 for some years now. I have had
little trouble with it until lately. Now it worked fine on my mega 4. I
installed Gadgets sst board. That is the problem. Wordup3 does work on the
sst except for one function. I will not print in graphics mode. Dave knows
and does have the program. It does not crash when asked to print, it acts
like there is not any memory left. I do have 12 megs of memory. Seems that
the way Wordup sets aside memory fails with the sst. I don't have my old
copies of word up 2. If I did I would try to print with that. MY questions
are, does anybody know how to get wordup to print with the sst, or with the
TT. General feeling is that if it will work with the TT it can be made to
work with the sst. I have use just about every other function in Wordup3
runing the program in fast ram, with the cache on and it flies. Believe me,
it is really nice to see it run so fast. So if I could just make it print,
even if I had to load version 2 just for printing, at least I would not have
lost all my old documents. Finally, believe me I have tried every
combination of fast ram, no cache etc that can be used on the sst. Cheers,
David,
Charles beat me to the punch about Calligrapher.
But on the subject of WordUp, you said you're getting tired of waiting for
Atari to update WordUp. You sound like you had expected them to update it.
While it is common knowledge that Atari bought the source code of WordUp from
Neocept, there has been no announcement from Atari that ever indicated they
planned to do an update of WordUp. Waiting for an unannounced, and possibly
unplanned, update of WordUp from Atari will likely be very tiring for anyone
engaging in such an expectation.
I'm sure Atari has intentions for the source code they purchased from Neocept,
but they have never shared that by way of public announcement with us
outsiders.
Sadly, too many people tend to take a little information and fill in the
blanks and then hold Atari responsible for not accommodating their fantasies.
This can happen both inside and outside of a company like Atari. After a
while, fancy seems to become fact when people don't know the whole story,
accepting whatever is fed to them at face value.
Charles,
Are you (or anyone else at Codeheads) fairly familiar with WordUp? I for one,
and I suspect nearly everyone who reads this topic, would like to know more
about Caligrapher, but more specifically, I'd like to see a description that
compared it to WordUp since that's what I am most familiar with. Since WordUp
is not supported anymore, I'm sure no one would object to such a discussion in
this topic, in fact, it would be most appropriate here since it would be of
little interest to most readers in your category to hear how Caligrapher
compares to WordUp.
Most everyone here 1) likes the features, the look and feel of WordUp and 2)
wishes for something comparable that is supported by a reputable company like
Codeheads.
Jeff, I did indeed hope that Atari would do SOMETHING with WordUp that might
ultimately benefit me and other WUP users. But since Atari can't even seem to
get FSMGDOS or the NOTEBOOK out the door to the average user, I'm not
surprised that they've done nothing with WUP.
Well I was going to ask if anyone had Wordup 3.0 working on a TT but that
question has been asked. It gives me the strange out of memory message when it
has over a meg to play with! Has anyone tried setting the bits in the ".inf"
file as described in the back of the manual? I can use it to edit just can't
get it to print anything. I'd try editing the ".inf" file but I haven't found
a sector editor for the TT/tos 3.06.
One more question for the person with the SST board. Is Wordup set to run in
fast ram. If it can be moved there and allocate the ST ram things may work for
you. I only have ST ram at this time.
How long does your DeskJet spend printing a typical WordUp page? I've got a
DJ+, and have found that some DAs can cause a twentyfold lengthening of print
time. When everything was copacetic, I'd get a page in about 2 minutes under
G+Plus. FSM has cut that time in half.
David, If you consider a 2-3 minute print interminable, you'll never be happy
with an ink jet printer.
Sam, I can think of two possibilities. Are the ASCII files lengthy? If so,
they might be causing problems with WordUp's memory management. Are the ASCII
files clean? Characters outside the normal ASCII range could be causing WordUp
to convulse.
I always use Interlink's text buffer to look at ASCII files.... If you turn on
the 'unfiltered' option you'll see any weird characters that might be screwing
up WUP. Don't pay attention to the bell or the CR signs, that's part of the
unfiltered format, but any other characters below ASCII value 32 some of those
between 173 and say 230 are a real pain to import to WUP. Very often if you
can get the ASCII file to import at all, you'll find some odd character at the
end of the file which will cause it to crash. If you can get it to load,
immediately save it to a *.WUP file and then reload it as an 'open' file
rather than an import file.
Love that WordUp.....
Have you tried just having a saved blank .WUP file saved as an .ASC file, and
What happens when you try to run Word Up? Does it bomb right away, never
letting you even into the program? If that's the case, then you may have the
original version of Word Up 3.0. Check the files on your master disk #1. If
the file PROGRAM is 159,697 bytes, than you have the old version that won't
work with your machine. The fixed PROGRAM file is 144,810 bytes long. The
update file is available here on GEnie. It is file #16332, WUPDATE.ARC
I was just wondering if anyone out there has WordUp 3.0 running on a TT. I had
a lot of problems just getting it to the point where I can edit a file. Now it
just does not want to recognize that I did specify a printer in the assign.sys
file.
For those interested to get Wordup 3.0 to be somewhat usable on a TT you must
create a new directory called FONTSDEV.06, 6 is the resolution Id for TT
medium, and copy your fonts from FONTSDEV.04 to it. Next using a binary file
editor, edit you WORDUP.INF file and change it to force WORDUP to not allocate
all of memory, I left 1/4 meg free. After all that you will be able to edit
your file but printing still gives an error message and tells me to print in
text mode.
If anyone has gotten this to work I'd really like to here from them.
regarding the next four bytes re: amount of memory reserved for other
Smokey,
When you edit the wordup.inf file, you're editing a binary file. The values
will be in hexadecimal. Two bytes are used for the lines per inch setting.
This means it is stored as a 16-bit value. 0006 does mean 6 lines per inch.
In order to set Word Up to reserve 100K for other programs, set the next four
bytes to 00000064. That's the hex value for 100. Four bytes are used for
this one, meaning it is being stored as a 32 bit value. You need to use a
binary file editor to change these values (such as Disk Doctor, or Edhak).
00 06 00 00 00 64 00 00 07 D0 57 4F 52 44 55 50
Where the "64" should indicate 100K reserved, but no memory is reserved. What
am doing wrong? (I used Tool 19 to editor the file.) By the way, the reason I
want to reserve memory is to used GRAMSLAM with the product.
If your Wordup.inf file starts out as:
00 06 00 00 00 64 00 00 07 D0 57 4F 52 44 55 50
This should give you 6 lpi (00 06), 100 bytes of memory reserved for other
program (00 00 00 64), and a cut/paste memory buffer of 2000 bytes (00 00 07
D0). For 100K of reserved memory, it should be 00 01 90 00 (100 * 1024 =
102,400, or 19000 hex). Now that should do it. I misunderstood the Word Up
instructions when I told you to put 00 00 00 64 in there. I thought the
setting was for how many Kilobytes of memory to reserve. Apparently it isn't.
It is for the exact number of bytes.
Did you have Word Up working with your laser printer before you had a TT.
Without purchasing the additional fonts in the Turbojet package, Word Up will
not even install itself! You can get around this to a certain degree by
manually (ie. without the Word Up installation program) install the GDOS
printer driver from Atari (SLM.SYS) and adding the appropriate laser printer
font names to your ASSIGN.SYS file. Using this method, you'll only be able to
use the 3 fonts which accompanmied the GDOS driver - Typewriter, Swiss and
Dutch. You won't be able to use all the other fonts which came with Word Up.
I finally got a working copy of Word Up 3.0 (after two years of searching for
manual, it states that you can just put the screen fonts in the FONTSDEV.04
and read to go. But while the screen fonts read in fine, the PRINTER fonts
seem to crash the system. I've tried by process of elimination, to find the
culprit, but it appears that ALL the printer fonts no supplied with Word Up
will crash my system when the program asks for the "Print Disk". I can't
figure out why this is. I got a good packet of fonts just yesterday from GEnie
(and were supposed to be Word UP fonts) but NONE will work. Anyone out there
have any clues as to why this may be?
P.LATONA - I've been experimenting with fonts and WORUP3 for 4 years.
Some fonts work in the FONTSDEV.? folder and some don't. The system used by
wordup is designed to save ram by loading fonts only as used.
Most GDOS fonts will work if you set up the assign.sys to load them on
running the program - put printer and screen fonts for your new fonts in your
font folder - Wordup INSTALL.PRG writes one called GDOS.SYS - then list them
in your ASSIGN.SYS and WORDUP will load them when it runs. Like this
Path = (your font folder path) ; 01p screen.sys ; Default screen ; 02p
screen.sys ; Low-Rez screen ; 03p screen.sys ; Med-Rez screen NOT_USED.FNT ;
this must be included to use fonts in FONTSDEV folders. ;list your med-rez
screen fonts here ; 04p screen.sys ; High-Rex screen NOT_USED.FNT ; as above.
Word up 3 won't run if this ain't here. ; List your high-rez fonts here. ; 21
(your printer sys) ; printer driver NOT_USED.FNT ; list your printer fonts
here ; 31 META.SYS
One last comment - be sure you are using the right fonts for your printer-
9pin, 24 pin, etc.
Ted,
I've seen that happen twice before, on systems with not enough memory
available for WordUp to compose pages before sending them to the printer. As
I recall, you're running 4 megs. Have you allocated any new memory lately to
buffers, spoolers, ram disks, accessories? Depending on the fonts (and
graphics?) you may be using in your letters, WordUp sometimes needs a lot more
memory (a couple of megs) than seems reasonable to compose a page.
As an experiment, you might try freeing up some more of your 4 megs for WordUp
to play with.
I have added fonts to WordUp without any trouble at all. Were you able to
print documents before you installed the new ones? The only thing I can think
of is that maybe the file names are wrong....For example, all the files in the
FONTSDEV.04 folder are *HI.FNT (e.g. COURHI.FNT) and all the files in the
FONTSDEV.21 folder should be *QD.FNT (e.g. COURQD.FNT).
Anna ;-)
The only thing I have in my ASSIGN.SYS file for WordUp (mine's called
Wordup.SYS because I use G+Plus) is the NOT_USED.FNT and I'm able to use the
fonts (that are in the FONTSDEV folders) without any trouble.
Anna - some fonts work in the FONTSDEV folder for me and some won't -
experimentation a year ago showed me it had to do with the font's ID #, bu I
can't remember which ranges wouldn't work in the folder and had to be in the
Hmmmm.....I guess I've just been lucky as far as getting fonts to work in the
that you didn't have to have the fonts listed in numerical order.
Jeff,
If you have installed the program before (for another printer) you'll have to
go back an REINSTALL the program again. Actually it dosen't take too long.
Search the library here and look for a file called WUPDATE4.LZH (or .ARC). It
fixes some of the printing bugs th original release had.
If I've missed the boat on your question, please ask me again.
I guess the answer to my last question (message 170) is no, huh?
Well, alright, I have another question. I seem to be having the opposite
versions of a problem with printing from Word-Up on my two machines. On my
520ST, I have to constantly take the printer off-line then back on-line for
the whole document to print (this is in graphics mode). Meanwhile, on my TT at
work, many times the last few lines of a full page of text is lost (in text
mode of course). Both machines are hooked to Panasonic KXP1124i's. Note that
if I don't use a LQ font (i.e. use the 1124's draft font) the problem goes
away.
It sure seems like this is a failure of the parallel port and the printer to
communicate properly. My question is, has anyone else observed this, and is
there any way to fix it?
Thanks again, John K.
John K.,
Printing from WordUp has always had an element of voodoo in it. Some setups
can print, some can't. One thing the successful setups have in common is lots
of memory. From what I've read in this topic over the years, trying to run
WordUp with a Meg or less is most likely to cause frustration. When the
program assembles the page in memory to be printed, it has serious problems if
there is not lots and lots of free RAM. Also, if anyone has gotten the program
to print with a 68030 processor involved, I've never seen it mentioned here.
To add to what Fred said, I have found that if when I go to print (without
graphics) using WordUp with less than 1.5 meg I get half pages or split pages
sometimes?? It is as Fred said, a great program, but a real memory hog..
Hope this helps...
Does anyone know if there are problems with the text printer drivers for Word
It will print until it hits the center tab stop section and then form feeds
endlessly. This is for my KXP1080i and I am using the driver named KXP1090,
I am having a slight problem with WordUP and my KXP1124i printer that I hope
someone can give me some insight on. The problem is that when I send a
document to be printed, the printer responds, and prints a line or two then
stops. If I take it off-line, then back on-line, the rest of the document
prints out, usually OK. If I'm printing in graphics mode, I have to keep
performing this routine (off-line then on-line) every so often. I'm fairly
sure this isn't a memory problem since I have 2.5 megs installed and start
Word Up with, usually, something like 1.7M free. This happens with _all_
documents no matter what the length. Has this happened to anyone else? Any
ideas or hints? (BTW I have a 520STm upgraded to 2.5M with the JRI SIMM board
and use G+PLUS v1.5.
John,
Don't assume that you have no memory problems with WordUp just because you
have a lot of it free. Try running the program on a really bare setup. I've
discovered that Wordup will just flat refuse to print properly with some desk
accessories and AUTO programs installed, no matter how much memory there is.
The order of installation of DAs has even affected printing! If you don't have
a boot utility program, WordUp will surely force you to consider getting one!
Actually for all the talk here knocking WordUp 3, I have found it to pretty
reliable. I've run it on 2 meg, 2.5 meg and 4 meg systems. Like Fred says, as
long as you keep your auto programs and accessories to a bare minimum, it
works just fine. If it starts printing half pages, it's because you've got
too many auto programs or accessories installed.
When in Word-less_than-Perfect, send your text out under CTL-F5 as WP 4.2 but
don't expect to get any graphics. Get WP Switch or Isostasis to convert the
WP4.2 over to Wordup. Try it - you'll like it. I have been using Wordup
since 1988 and still love it. I use the master pages a lot with section
markers, graphic images. As a beta tester you should see how fast it prints
to an SLM with Speedo!
I edited the .RSC file to cleanup a few little problems such as the phantom
F10 delete a line when scrolling with the bottom down arrow.
Yup, I still love WordUp. You can go in an edit the configuration of the
program ya know.... read the v3.0 manual about editing how much memory to
leave for other programs. If you don't know, leave a note here or in EMail
for me. Also, with a 2.5Meg machine, you'll be hard pressed to make it run ok
with anything more than one screen font and a minimum of AUTO folder stuff and
.ACC in memory. It is just that simple.
Keep truckin guys. I've not had a problem with Wordup so long as you
recognize and deal with the memory limitations. Don't try to load every font
you have. Stick with Dutch 10 or 12 preferably but not both.
to the libraries. If Bill Rehbock is listening, can we get approval?
Also, since Atari owns the code, how hard would it be to fix thwe printing
problem with the '030 so the user base that still wants to use WordUp and want
to buy a TT or Falcon won't be left behind. We appreciate you're not under
any obligation to do this but if we ask nicely...... :-)
If we can't u/l the changed .RSC file, get ORCS.LZH out of the libraries and
load the WORDUP.RSC file. Edit the boxes for the Function keys by shrinking
them all a little bit until you have enough daylight under the scroll arrow so
mouse clicks don't delete lines.
Thanks for all the suggestions. I think I may have solved my printing
problem. I had just thought that I had added some new DA's and maybe that was
the prob. However, on eliminating DA's and auto progs, I finally hit upon
eliminating my print spooler in RAMBABY. This seems to fix things. Don't know
why, I haven't fooled with the spooler in years (I think), maybe a combo of a
DA and the spooler? Oh well, as long as it works now. BTW, I discovered that
WordUp was not part of the problem, or should I say, it wasn't the only prog
to have the problem. When printing from Phasar the same thing happened. Hope
I've got rid of it now!
If you want a good spooler ram disk combo, take a hard look at the CodeHead
Utilities disk.. A package of a dozen or so, useful and crash proof
utilities..
The spooler & ram disk alone are worth the price of admission. And both work
fine, with Word Up, and can been configured any way you want..
